This month we promised to talk about all things insurance and put the call out to a number of insurance experts to get the best advice on how to deal with hirers and how to make sure all events are insured adequately. Here is what a few of them said:

“I would think Property Insurance and General Liability would be the two key products a Community Hall should invest in,” said Paula Cruden from Community Underwriting a Sydney based insurance firm who specialise in insurance for the not-for-profit sector. www.communityunderwriting.com.au


“Generally we would always recommend that community groups have a broker, they need to be able to seek advice and this is not what you get through a direct insurer,” said Stephen Gray from Midas who specialise in one-off Event Insurance. www.midas.net.au

The main message from them all? Make sure you are adequately insured when hiring your venue by following these pieces of advice:

  1. Make sure your property and liability insurance are up to date and current.

  2. Although not legally obligated to do so, you should request a copy of the hirers certificate of currency for public liability.

  3. If you have a regular hirer (i.e weekly or monthly hiring) these activities can be added onto your policy as ongoing activities.

  4. Find a broker that you trust and can work with to give you the best advice.

  5. Pass on hirers questions to your broker to arrange adequate insurance for their activities if they do not have their own.

  6. Hirers can obtain one off event insurance to cover their activities.

  7. If hiring to a business or sole trader, they should have standard public liability which their event/s can be added to.

  8. Some home contents insurance policies will allow you to extend your public liability outside of the home, have hirers check with their broker.
